Allemand Als eines der vielen Eishockeyspiele, die veröffentlicht wurden, kann der Spieler in dieser Version nicht nur Gretzky steuern, sondern auch andere wichtige Spieler der damaligen Zeit wie Mario Lemieux, Eric Lindros, Mark Messier und viele andere, insgesamt 600. Außerdem stehen die 26 NHL-Teams der damaligen Zeit sowie 6 internationale Teams zur Auswahl.

Das Gameplay ist ähnlich wie bei vielen anderen Eishockeyspielen mit den Standardmodi wie Exhibition, Season, Playoffs oder sogar einer "Just Play"-Option, die den Spieler sofort zu einem zufälligen Spiel bringt. Es gibt auch einen "Simulationsmodus", der dem Spiel inklusive Strafen ein authentisches Gefühl verleiht, oder einen "Arcade-Modus", der mehr auf Action ausgerichtet ist und weniger Regeln enthält. Das Spiel beinhaltet ein Batterie-Backup, sorgt für eine umfassende Übersicht mit Statistiken und bietet natürlich auch eine Zwei-Spieler-Option.

There is also a "Simulation Mode" that gives the game an authentic feel complete with penalties or an "Arcade Mode" that was more action oriented and with less rules. A battery back-up keeps extensive track of stats and has a two-player option as well.

Le opzioni e le modalità di gioco sono numerosissime con vari campionati, una modalità "partita immediata" per chi non vuole perdere tempo, e diverse sessioni di allenamento (libero, faccia a faccia, duello con il portiere). È possibile impostare il gioco in arcade o simulazione (influenza su falli, infortuni, ecc.), consentire o meno combattimenti e falli, o anche ridurre l'inerzia dei movimenti.
