Das Spiel findet auch in einer fantasievollen, traumähnlichen Welt anstatt im Weltraum statt, wie viele andere Schießspiele. Das Spiel kann mit anderen Fantasy-Shoot-'em-up-Spielen wie Parodius verglichen werden. Es hat die meisten Ähnlichkeiten im Stil mit dem Chariot-Spiel auf Three Wonders.

Der Spieler steuert Cotton, eine junge Hexe auf einem Besenstiel. Der Spieler muss verschiedene Monster sprengen und vermeiden, erschossen zu werden. Der Spieler kann Power-Ups sammeln, um seine Waffen zu verbessern und einen stärkeren Angriff auf den Feind zu entfesseln. Das Leben des Spielers wird durch einen Pfeil dargestellt. What distinguishes Cotton: Fantastic Night Dreams from other games of a similar ilk is its bright colourful graphics and its lead character, Cotton. The game also takes place in a fantasy dream-like world instead of space like many other shooting games. The game can be compared to other fantasy Shoot 'em up games like Parodius. It bears most similarities in style to the Chariot game on Three Wonders.

The player controls Cotton, a young witch on a broomstick. The player must blast various monsters and avoid being shot. The player can collect power-ups to enhance their weaponry and unleash a more powerful attack on the enemy. The player has lives represented by an arrow. The player has three lives and is only allowed one hit per life.

Espagnol En "Cotton: Fantastic Night Dreams" el jugador controla a Cotton, una joven bruja que vuela subida en su escoba mágica. El estilo de juego es el de un Shoot 'Em Up horizontal en el cual deberás acabar con diferentes criaturas mientras esquivas sus ataques. Podrás aumentar tus poderes por medio de power-ups. La vida del jugador es representada en una flecha y unicamente posees tres vidas.
El juego fué lanzado en un primer momento para la maquina recreativa "Arcade system board" en 1991 y posteriormente fue editado para TurboGrafx-CD, versión que cuenta con un sonido y música mejorados.
