Allemand Die Geschichte spielt in einer mysteriösen Welt, die von einer bösen Diktatur regiert wird, welche als das Gesthalianische Imperium bekannt ist. 'Das Imperium' ist entschlossen, seine Herrschaft über die Welt weiter auszubauen, indem es sich die Macht der Esper (mächtige magische Geschöpfe) zunutze macht und sie als Waffen benutzt.

Gefährdete rivalisierende Herrscher, mutige Rebellen und eine Handvoll Verbannte müssen nun ihre Kräfte vereinen, um das Imperium daran zu hindern, sein Ziel zu erreichen. Die Geschichte beginnt mit einem Schatzjäger namens Locke und dem amnesiekranken Zauberer Terra, die gezwungen sind, dem Imperium zu entfliehen. Im Laufe der Geschichte treffen Locke und Terra eine lange Reihe weiterer Charaktere, die alle eine entscheidende Rolle bei der Befreiung der Welt spielen.
