The pacing is deliberate, often requiring careful exploration and frequent backtracking. L'objectif principal est d'explorer des donjons, de vaincre leurs boss et de rassembler les fragments dispersés de la Triforce afin d'affronter Ganon à la fin. Le gameplay reprend des mécaniques familières : combat à l'épée, arc pour activer des cibles éloignées, et bombes pour révéler des murs suspects et des passages cachés. Le rythme est volontairement posé, demandant de l'attention, une exploration minutieuse et des retours en arrière fréquents.
