Allemand Defender ist ein legendäres Side-Scrolling-Shoot-Em-Up – das erste seiner Art – bei dem das Ziel darin besteht, ein laserfeuerndes Raumschiff zu steuern und auf der Planetenoberfläche gefangene Humanoide vor einem Schwarm außerirdischer Entführer zu schützen.
Ein Langstreckenscanner am oberen Bildschirmrand zeigt die Positionen der angreifenden Humanoiden und Außerirdischen. Die ideale Strategie besteht darin, die außerirdischen Schiffe abzuschießen, bevor sie die Humanoiden erreichen. Wenn ein Humanoid gefangen wird, kann der außerirdische Entführer zerstört werden, aber der Spieler muss dann den fallenden Humanoiden auffangen und ihn in die Sicherheit der Planetenoberfläche zurückbringen, bevor er in den Tod stürzt.
Wenn der Außerirdische sein Opfer an den oberen Bildschirmrand bringt, mutiert der Humanoide und wird ein dauerhafter Teil des Außerirdischen, der ihn gefangen hat.

Anglais Defender is a legendary sideways-scrolling shoot-em-up - the very first of its genre - in which the aim is to pilot a laser-firing spaceship and protect humanoids stranded on the planet's surface from swarms of alien abductors.

A long-range scanner at the top of the screen shows the positions of both the humanoids and the attacking aliens. The ideal strategy is to shoot down the alien ships before they reach the humanoids. If a humanoid is captured, the alien abductor can still be destroyed, but the player must then catch the falling humanoid and return it to the safety of the planet's surface before it falls to its death.

If an alien is allowed to carry its victim to the very top of the screen, the humanoid will mutate, becoming a permanent part of the alien that captured it. This new and deadly mutation will then immediately join in the alien attack.

Espagnol Defender es un legendario shoot-em-up de desplazamiento lateral -el primero de su genero- en el que el objetivo es pilotar una nave espacial que dispara láser y proteger a los humanoides atrapados en la superficie del planeta de un enjambre de abductores extraterrestres.
Un escáner de largo alcance en la parte superior de la pantalla muestra las posiciones de los humanoides y de los alienígenas atacantes. La estrategia ideal es derribar las naves alienígenas antes de que lleguen a los humanoides. Si un humanoide es capturado, el abductor alienígena puede ser destruido, pero el jugador debe entonces atrapar al humanoide que cae y devolverlo a la seguridad de la superficie del planeta antes de que caiga a su muerte.
Si el alien se lleva a su víctima a la parte superior de la pantalla, el humanoide mutará, convirtiéndose en una parte permanente del alienígena que lo capturó.

Français Defender est un des premiers jeux de shoot'em up tel qu'on les connaît. Malgré ses 20 ans et ses sons un peu énervants, Defender reste toujours aussi agréable à jouer, notamment grâce à l'animation qui donne une agréable impression de vitesse lorsqu'on avance.

La grande difficulté, à l'époque du jeu d'arcade, était de s'y retrouver dans les boutons qui entouraient le joystick. Cela rend le jeu assez difficile au début - l'espérance de vie du débutant est souvent très courte. La personnalisation des Entrées peut simplifier le maniement : par exemple, pour qui possède un joystick, il est préférable de mettre le gaz (thrust) en Axe-X + et -, et mettre l'Inverser en Bouton 1 à la place des gaz. La Bombe (Bouton 2) nettoie l'écran, comme il se doit.

Italien Defender è un videogioco di tipo sparatutto a scorrimento orizzontale spaziale, sviluppato e prodotto da Williams Electronics e uscito in sala giochi nel 1981 (con copyright del 1980).
Il gioco è stato realizzato da un team di persone a capo delle quali vi era Eugene Jarvis, programmatore anche di Robotron: 2084.
Defender è il primo videogioco nel quale è stato introdotto il concetto di scorrimento orizzontale.

Il giocatore comanda una astronave su un fondale a scorrimento orizzontale circolare e infinito dove deve cercare di evitare che i nemici alieni rapiscano gli umanoidi amici.
I nemici sono di tipo Lander, Mutant, Baiter, Bomber, Pod e Swarmer. Attenzione perche' il laser della astronave può disintegrare anche gli umanoidi amici.
Quando vengono rapiti dai Lander devono essere liberati e portati in salvo prima che si trasformino in Mutant.

Quando tutte le astronavi nemiche sono state eliminate si ottiene un bonus che dipende dal numero degli umanoidi tratti in salvo, e si passa così a un nuovo livello.
Non appena l'ultimo umanoide viene trasformato oppure ucciso, il pianeta esplode e tutti i Lander si trasformano in Mutant.
