Allemand In Wizardry I: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord hat der wahnsinnige Trebor einst ein mächtiges Amulett besessen, bis es ihm vom finsteren Erzmagier Werdna gestohlen wurde. Ein unbedachter Zauber erschafft daraufhin ein zehnstöckiges Labyrinth unter Trebors Burg, das Werdna zu seinem neuen Unterschlupf erklärt. Um die Blamage zu überspielen, erklärt Trebor den Dungeon kurzerhand zum Prüfungsort für Abenteurer, die dort nicht nur gegen Monster bestehen, sondern auch das Amulett zurückholen sollen. Du stellst eine sechsköpfige Heldengruppe zusammen, wählst Rassen, Gesinnungen und Klassen, und wagst dich in das gefährliche Labyrinth voller rundenbasierter Kämpfe, Fallen und Schätze.

Anglais The Mad Overlord Trebor was once only power-mad, but went off the deep end after he acquired a magical amulet of immense power, only to have it stolen from him by his nemesis, the evil archmage Werdna. Werdna, not quite sure how to use the amulet properly, accidentally causes an earthquake which creates a ten-level dungeon beneath Trebor's castle. To avoid looking silly, Werdna declares the dungeon to be the new lair for him and his monster hordes. Trebor, not to be outdone, declares the labyrinth his new Proving Grounds where adventurers must prove themselves for membership in his elite honor guard, and incidentally retrieve his amulet in the process.

Werdna, sem saber exatamente como usar o amuleto corretamente, acidentalmente causa um terremoto que cria uma masmorra de dez níveis sob o castelo de Trebor. Para não parecer ridículo, Werdna declara a masmorra como o novo covil para ele e suas hordas de monstros. Trebor, para não ficar para trás, declara o labirinto seu novo Campo de Provas, onde aventureiros devem provar seu valor para serem membros de sua guarda de honra de elite e, incidentalmente, recuperar seu amuleto no processo.
