Anglais Far Cry 2 is set in a small central African state in the throes of civil war. The government has recently collapsed, leaving two factions in control: the United Liberation Front (UFLL), led by opposition leader Addi Mbantuwe, and the Alliance for Popular Resistance (APR), led by Oliver Tambossa.

Both factions claim to have the interests of the people at heart, but both have shown a lack of compassion, hostility, greed and a general disregard for the welfare of the people. Both factions have hired mercenaries to strengthen their power during the conflict. The recent depletion of the country's diamond mines has left the country in disarray, leaving some mercenaries without pay and with no way out.
