Anglais he beginning of 21th century saw mankind descend into a new Dark Age. Ecological disasters led to rise of terrorism. The planet was engulfed in chaos, and several countries started preparing for a global-scale war. Meanwhile, the restored Soviet Union and Japan began a war of their own, initiating as a conflict over Japan's north-most island, Hokkaido...

Kaien is a doujin (freeware game by independent developer) vertically scrolling shooter. The player controls a lone Japanese jet, making its way through hostile areas, beginning with the defense of Hokkaido and advancing into enemy territories. The enemies include other jets, helicopters, ships, stationary cannons, tanks, and other military vehicles and machines. The player-controlled jet has a basic attack with unlimited ammunition, as well as several powerful attacks of limited usage, such as a fire blast that destroys an entire row of enemies, etc. As in most games of this kind, the levels are punctuated by mini-boss and stage boss battles. Running out of lives results in the Continue screen, forcing the player to restart the level.
