Allemand The Need for Speed war das erste Spiel der Need-for-Speed-Serie und wurde erstmals 1994 für den 3DO veröffentlicht. 1995 wurde der Konsolen-Titel für den PC portiert, 1996 erschien der Titel auf der PlayStation und dem Sega Saturn. Im Spiel stehen acht Fahrzeuge zur Auswahl, die man auf sieben verschiedenen Strecken ausfahren kann. Eine Besonderheit des Spiels ist es, dass die Rennen auf normal befahrenen Straßen unter Polizeiverfolgung gespielt werden. Das Spiel entstand in Zusammenarbeit mit der US-amerikanischen Auto-Zeitschrift ?Road & Track?, die genaue technische Details und viele Bilder und Videos zu den Autos beisteuerte.
