Allemand Adol Christins langjähriger Freund Dogi will in seine Heimatstadt Redmont zurückkehren, nachdem er von seltsamen Phänomenen gehört hat, die dort auftreten. Adol, der immer auf der Suche nach Abenteuern ist, schließt sich ihm an und entdeckt bald die Ursache dieses neuen Übels.
Ys III: Wanderers from Ys weicht vom Kampfsystem der ersten beiden Spiele ab und erlaubt es Adol, sein Schwert in verschiedene Richtungen zu steuern. Zusätzlich zur Änderung des Kampfsystems wechselt die Perspektive des Spiels zu einer seitlich scrollenden Ansicht, im Gegensatz zu der Draufsicht der vorherigen Spiele. Außerdem kann Adol nun springen. Neu in der Serie ist die Verwendung von magischen Ringen, die Adol verschiedene Upgrade-Fähigkeiten wie Heilung und Abschirmung verleihen. Das Spiel verwendet auch verschiedene Schlüsselobjekte, die auf dem Weg gefunden werden, um kleinere Rätsel zu lösen und die Geschichte voranzutreiben.

Anglais Adol Christin's long-time friend, Dogi, wishes to return to his home town of Redmont after hearing about strange disturbances that are happening there. Always looking for an adventure, Adol joins him and soon finds out the cause of this new evil. Ys III: Wanderers from Ys breaks away from the "bumping into enemies" battle system of the first two games, allowing Adol to control his sword in a variety of directions. Beside changing the battle system, the game's perspective switches to a side-scrolling view, as opposed to the top-down one of the previous games. Adol also has the ability to jump now. New to the series is the use of magical rings, which give Adol different powering-up abilities such as healing and shielding. The game also uses various key items found along the way to solve minor puzzles and progress the story.

Ys III : Wanderers from Ys s'éloigne du système de combat des deux premiers jeux, en permettant à Adol de contrôler son épée dans diverses directions. En plus de changer le système de combat, la perspective du jeu passe à une vue à défilement latéral, par opposition à la vue de haut en bas des jeux précédents. Adol a également la possibilité de sauter. La nouveauté de la série réside dans l'utilisation d'anneaux magiques, qui donnent à Adol différentes capacités d'amélioration telles que la guérison et le bouclier. Le jeu utilise également divers objets clés trouvés en cours de route pour résoudre des énigmes mineures et faire progresser l'histoire.
